Acer negundo 'Kelly's Gold' (Golden Box Elder)
A striking small tree for a sunny border, Acer negundo 'Kelly's Gold' produces pinnate leaves, made up of 5–7 leaflets, that emerge a vivid bright yellow in spring before mellowing to a soft yellow-green through summer, then intensifying back to golden yellow again as autumn approaches. In spring, male plants add a further flourish with yellow-green, tassel-like flowers.
This bushy-headed, medium-sized tree is easy-going and adaptable, thriving in full sun or partial shade and tolerating a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam, and sand. It reaches an ultimate height of 8–12 metres with a spread of 4–8 metres over 10–20 years, making it a manageable choice for gardens where a splash of golden foliage is wanted without the bulk of a larger specimen tree. Little pruning is needed beyond removing any plain green reverted shoots as soon as they appear, ideally in late autumn to midwinter, to keep the colour strong and consistent.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
