Quince trees bring beauty and flavour in equal measure. In late spring they are covered in large, cup-shaped blossoms in soft pink and white, followed in autumn by golden, pear-shaped fruit with a rich, heady fragrance. The fruit is too hard to eat raw, but slow cooking transforms it into fragrant rosy jellies, membrillo, tarts and compotes. A single quince will even perfume a room. Quinces make attractive, compact trees for smaller gardens, and most are self-fertile, so one tree will crop well on its own.
