A firm favourite for its striking foliage, Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Tom Thumb' is a compact, slow-growing evergreen shrub prized for its small, wavy-edged leaves in rich deep purple, set against dark, almost black stems. Fresh green new growth provides a lovely contrast as it emerges, giving this variety year-round colour and texture even without a flower in sight.
Naturally rounded and dense in habit, 'Tom Thumb' makes a wonderful low hedge or a striking specimen shrub in its own right, and works especially well as a punctuation point in a gravel garden or mixed border. In late spring and early summer it may produce small, honey-scented flowers, though flowering is never abundant, and the plant's real appeal lies firmly in its foliage. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding and dependable garden performance.
For the richest leaf colour, plant in full sun in a sheltered spot; in shadier positions the foliage will lighten to green. It thrives in well-drained soil and, once established, copes well with dry spells, though young plants benefit from regular watering in their first year. A light annual trim in spring is all that's needed to keep growth neat and compact.
Each plant is hand-selected by our team at Pengelly Garden Centre, ensuring you receive a healthy, well-established specimen ready to plant.
