A compact, colourful switch grass valued for its strong vertical form and vivid seasonal colour change. Medium green foliage forms a dense, upright clump through summer, gradually developing rich red, bronze, and wine-purple tints as autumn approaches. From late summer, delicate, airy flower panicles with a soft pink flush rise above the foliage, adding movement and texture that persists attractively through much of the winter.
This clump-forming perennial grass reaches around 1.2–1.5m (4–5ft) in height when in flower, with a spread of 60–90cm (2–3ft), making it a versatile choice for borders, prairie-style planting, or as a structural accent among late-flowering perennials. It grows in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained to moist but well-drained soil, and provides valuable winter interest and food for birds.
We've hand-selected each Panicum 'Squaw' for strong colour and healthy, well-established clumps.
