Hypericum 'Hidcote' – commonly known as St John's Wort – is one of the most popular and reliable varieties, prized for its abundant, large golden-yellow flowers. From midsummer right through into early autumn, saucer-shaped blooms up to 6cm across – among the largest of the hardy hypericums – cover the plant in clusters, each with a prominent tuft of golden stamens, creating a wonderfully long season of colour. A recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it's valued as one of the most dependable shrubs of its kind.

Forming a dense, bushy shrub with narrow, dark green leaves, this variety reaches a height and spread of around 1–1.5m, making it a superb choice for mixed or shrub borders, informal hedging, or as a cheerful, low-maintenance border filler.

Hypericum 'Hidcote' thrives in full sun to partial shade, in moist but well-drained soil, ideally in a sheltered spot away from cold, drying winds. Semi-evergreen and fully hardy, it's easy-going and rarely troubled by pests or disease – simply prune back annually to keep it looking its best. Its nectar-rich flowers are a firm favourite with bees.
