Cistus x pulverulentus 'Sunset' 3L

Commonly known as Rock Rose, Cistus x pulverulentus 'Sunset' brings a vivid splash of Mediterranean colour to the garden, with clusters of vibrant magenta-pink flowers, each with a striking golden-yellow eye, opening in succession throughout summer. The tissue-paper-thin petals have a delicate, crinkled texture reminiscent of a wild rose, and although each individual bloom lasts only a day, the shrub produces such a steady flush of new flowers that the display continues for weeks on end. This popular variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding garden performance.

The vivid flowers are set beautifully against a low, spreading mound of wavy-edged, grey-green foliage, giving 'Sunset' year-round evergreen structure even once flowering has finished. Compact and bushy in habit, it's ideally suited to the front of a sunny border, a rockery, or a container on a sun-baked patio, and its tolerance of coastal winds and salty air makes it a particularly good choice for exposed or seaside gardens.

Originating from the dry, rocky parts of the Mediterranean, this rock rose thrives in poor, well-drained soil and full sun, and is wonderfully drought-tolerant once established. A sheltered position will help it perform at its best. After flowering, pinch back young plants to encourage a bushy shape, and lightly trim to keep growth neat, taking care to avoid cutting back into old wood, as Cistus do not respond well to hard pruning.
