'White Versailles', also known as 'Versailles Blanche', is a classic French variety that has been grown since the mid-19th century. It is still one of the most popular whitecurrants because it is reliable and starts cropping early. From early July it bears long, heavy trusses of large, glossy, translucent berries in pale cream to soft yellow. They are noticeably sweeter and less sharp than redcurrants, so they are delicious eaten fresh from the bush. They also look lovely scattered over pavlovas and tarts, or made into jellies and cordials, and they freeze well.
'White Versailles' forms a vigorous, upright bush with gently arching stems, growing up to 1.5m tall and wide. It is self-fertile, so a single plant will crop on its own. It is also versatile: as well as a freestanding bush, it can be trained as a cordon or fan against a wall or fence, which suits smaller gardens. It does best in full sun or light shade in fertile, well-drained soil, and it appreciates some shelter from cold winds at flowering time. Dig in plenty of well-rotted compost or manure before planting. If you plant more than one bush, space them about 1.5m apart.
Unlike blackcurrants, whitecurrants fruit on spurs along older wood, so the aim is to build a permanent, open framework. In winter, shorten the main branches by about half and cut side shoots back to one or two buds. In early summer, trim new side shoots back to five leaves to let in light and air. Mulch each spring, water during dry spells while the fruit develops, and net the bush before the berries ripen, as birds love them.
Supplied in a 3 litre pot and can be planted at any time of year, though autumn is ideal. Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
