Salix alba var. vitellina 'Yelverton' – Red-Stemmed Willow (12L Pot)

'Yelverton' is prized for its rich bronze-red winter stems, which glow warmly through the darker months and come alive when lit by low winter sun or reflected in water. Small catkins appear in late spring, followed by narrow, mid-green leaves through summer. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is a fast-growing, easy willow for damp ground, pond and stream edges, and winter-interest planting. It looks especially effective alongside golden-stemmed willows and white-barked birches.

It grows to around 6m x 4m after 10 years if left unpruned. For the richest stem colour, cut it back hard in early spring every year or two. This coppicing or pollarding encourages plenty of vivid new shoots and keeps the plant compact. Plant in full sun in moist or wet soil. It tolerates chalk and clay. As with all willows, keep it well away from drains and buildings.
