Salix alba 'Hutchinson's Yellow' – Yellow-Stemmed White Willow (12L Pot)

'Hutchinson's Yellow' brings a blaze of colour to the winter garden with its bright, egg-yolk-yellow stems, which shine out against grey skies and look spectacular when lit by low winter sun or reflected in water. Yellow catkins appear in spring, followed by fresh green leaves through summer. It's a fast-growing and easy willow, perfect for damp ground, pond and stream edges, and winter-interest planting. It combines beautifully with red- and orange-stemmed dogwoods and willows.

It grows to around 6m x 5m after 10 years if left unpruned. For the brightest winter stems, cut back hard in early April every year or two. This coppicing encourages plenty of vivid new shoots and keeps the plant compact. Plant in full sun in moist or wet soil. It tolerates chalk, clay and coastal conditions. As with all willows, keep it well away from drains and buildings.
