Salix alba 'Golden Ness' – Golden-Stemmed White Willow (12L Pot)

'Golden Ness' is grown for its brilliant stems, which glow burnished gold through the winter months and bring warmth and colour to the garden when little else is showing. They look especially magical when caught by low winter sun or reflected in water. Yellow catkins appear in spring, followed by slender, lance-shaped, mid-green leaves through summer. It was selected at Ness Botanic Gardens on the Wirral and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It's a vigorous, reliable willow for damp ground, ponds and streamsides, and for winter gardens.

It grows to around 6m x 4m after 10 years if left unpruned. For the best winter colour, cut the stems back hard in early spring every year or two. This coppicing or pollarding encourages plenty of vivid new growth and keeps the plant compact. Plant in full sun in moist or wet soil. As with all willows, keep it well away from drains and buildings.
