Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia' – Golden False Acacia

'Frisia' is one of the brightest trees you can grow, lighting up the garden with its feathery, golden-yellow leaves from spring right through to autumn. The delicate pinnate foliage contrasts beautifully with its wine-red young shoots and thorns, which age to brown. On mature trees, hanging clusters of fragrant white pea-like flowers appear in early summer. It was raised in the Netherlands in 1935 and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It's fast-growing and makes a dazzling specimen tree, especially against dark evergreens or purple foliage.

It grows to around 5m x 4m after 10 years. Plant in full sun to dappled shade, in a spot sheltered from strong winds, as the branches can be brittle. It is remarkably tolerant, coping with poor, dry and chalky soils as well as coastal conditions, although it does best in moderately fertile ground. Little pruning is needed; if any is required, do it in late summer to avoid bleeding. All parts of the tree are toxic if eaten, so it's best planted away from grazing animals.
