Pear (Pyrus) Concorde 12L Half Standard

Concorde is a modern English pear that brings together the best of two classic varieties, Conference and Doyenné du Comice. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is one of the most reliable and rewarding pears you can grow. White spring blossom, loved by bees, is followed in October by heavy crops of large, pale green-yellow pears, lightly touched with russet. The flesh is sweet, juicy and melting, with a rich, well-balanced flavour inherited from Comice. The pears also store well, often keeping into the new year somewhere cool.

This half standard has a clear trunk of around 1.2m beneath a well-branched crown. It grows into a classic freestanding orchard-style tree with room to mow or plant beneath, which suits lawns, larger gardens and small orchards. Concorde crops from an early age. It is partly self-fertile, so it can produce some fruit on its own, but it crops more heavily with another pear nearby. Beth, Conference and Beurré Hardy all make good partners, and Concorde is an excellent pollinator for other pears too. Plant in full sun in a sheltered spot, in deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soil, and stake firmly for the first few years. Pears flower early, so avoid frost pockets. Thin heavy crops after the natural early summer drop for better-sized fruit, and pick the pears while still firm, then ripen them indoors for the best flavour. Prune in winter to keep an open shape and encourage fruiting spurs. Fully hardy.
