Pterocarya fraxinifolia – Caucasian Wingnut (7L Pot)

The Caucasian wingnut is a fast-growing, wide-spreading tree that brings real drama to larger gardens, parkland and waterside planting. Through summer it is hung with long, green catkins up to 50cm long, which develop into chains of winged fruits and make a striking sight among the large, glossy, ash-like leaves. The foliage turns a lovely butter-yellow in autumn, and with age the bark becomes deeply furrowed, giving the tree character all year round. It comes from the Caucasus and northern Iran and is fully hardy, and it's increasingly valued as a resilient choice for a changing climate.

It grows to around 7m x 4m after 10 years and eventually becomes a large tree, so give it plenty of space. It thrives in full sun in moist to wet soil and is ideal beside ponds, streams or lakes. It can produce suckers, which are easily removed if you want to keep it to a single trunk.
