Phormium 'Platt's Black' 3L

A striking, compact New Zealand flax grown for its dramatic, near-black colouring — slender, arching leaves emerge in a deep purple so dark it reads almost as black, glossy on the surface with a subtle sheen, making this one of the most architectural foliage plants for the garden. In a good summer, tall, leafless stems may push up panicles of vivid red flowers, attracting nectar-seeking birds and adding a further burst of contrast against the dark foliage.

This evergreen, clump-forming perennial reaches a height of up to 1.2m (4ft), making it one of the more compact Phormium varieties and an excellent choice as a centrepiece in containers, or as a bold, dark foil for silvers, pinks, and blues in a mixed border. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade, and may benefit from a dry winter mulch in colder or more exposed parts of the UK.
