Phormium cookianum hookeri 'Tricolor' 3L

Also known as mountain flax, this large, architectural evergreen perennial forms a striking clump of sword-shaped leaves, boldly striped in creamy-yellow and green and finely edged in red — colours that intensify to a warmer, pinkish-red flush during cooler weather. Mature plants may send up tall flower spikes bearing yellowish-green blooms in summer, adding further height and interest above the foliage. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, recognising its outstanding, reliable garden performance.

This evergreen perennial reaches a height of 1.5–2.5m (5–8ft), with a spread of 1–1.5m (3¼–5ft), making it a bold, structural centrepiece for larger borders, coastal gardens, or as a striking specimen in a large container. It grows best in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun, and may need the protection of a deep, dry winter mulch in colder or more exposed parts of the UK.
