Panicum virgatum 'Prairie Sky'
A striking, steely-blue switch grass, Panicum virgatum 'Prairie Sky' brings cool, powdery colour and strong vertical structure to the garden. Its flat, narrow, lance-shaped leaves hold a distinctive blue-green tone through spring and summer, standing stiffly upright in a shapely, columnar clump before turning warm orange-yellow as autumn takes hold.
In early autumn, drooping, branched panicles of small blue-green spikelets appear, forming an airy, cloud-like haze above the foliage that provides valuable winter interest and a food source for birds as the seed heads mature and persist into the colder months.
Reaching 1–1.5m in height with a spread of 0.5–1m, 'Prairie Sky' is well suited to prairie-style planting, mixed borders, or as a bold specimen where its distinctive blue foliage can stand out against greener neighbours. It's a tough, reliable grass, tolerant of drought, salt, and wind once established.
Grow in full sun in any moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Cut back to the base in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
