Olearia × haastii

Commonly known as the daisy bush, Olearia × haastii is a dense, bushy evergreen shrub valued for its year-round structure and reliable summer flowers. Its smooth, oval leaves are dark green and glossy above, with a distinctive white felted underside that catches the light attractively when stirred by the breeze. From midsummer into late summer, the shrub is smothered in dense sprays of small, star-shaped white flowers with cheerful yellow centres, offering a valuable late-season nectar source for pollinators.

A robust and adaptable plant, Olearia × haastii reaches 1.5–2.5m in height with a generous spread of 2.5–4m, making it well suited to informal hedging, coastal planting, or as a substantial specimen shrub in a mixed border. It's particularly valued for its resilience to coastal winds, pollution, and poor soils, and copes well in chalky or sandy conditions.

Grow in full sun in any well-drained soil, in a sheltered spot away from cold, drying winds for best results. Remove faded flowerheads to keep the plant tidy, and lightly trim back any uneven growth in mid to late spring to maintain a neat shape.
