Molinia caerulea 'Variegata'

An eye-catching variegated grass, Molinia caerulea 'Variegata' forms a neat, compact clump of arching foliage boldly striped in cream over dark green, bringing brightness and contrast to the garden from spring right through to autumn. In summer, narrow, dainty purple flower panicles rise on slender stems above the foliage, adding a light, airy texture without overwhelming the striking leaves below.

This RHS Award of Garden Merit winner is a modest, well-mannered grass, with flowering stems reaching around 60cm in height, making it perfectly suited to smaller borders, gravel gardens, or the front of a mixed planting scheme where its variegation can be fully appreciated. As autumn arrives, the foliage takes on warm golden tones for a final flourish before dying back for winter.

Easy to grow and reliably hardy, 'Variegata' thrives in full sun or light shade and tolerates most soil types, doing best in moist, moderately fertile conditions. Cut back old growth to ground level in late winter or early spring, ready for fresh shoots to emerge.
