The tallest and most airy of the Molinia family, Molinia arundinacea 'Transparent' is prized for its gossamer-fine, almost see-through flower spikelets that seem to float above the foliage on tall, slender stems. From late summer into autumn, these delicate purple-brown flowers create a shimmering haze that catches every breath of wind, gradually darkening as the season progresses for a striking architectural display well into winter.

Below the flowers, neat clumps of arching, strap-like green leaves form a tidy base, turning golden-yellow in autumn before dying back. Reaching up to 1.5–1.8m in height with a spread of around 0.9–1.2m once established, this is a statuesque grass best used as a see-through screen or woven through the middle of a border among large-flowered perennials, where its transparent flower heads add movement without blocking the view.

A native of UK moorland, 'Transparent' is unfussy about soil as long as it isn't allowed to dry out, and thrives in full sun or partial shade on moist, acidic to neutral ground. It's low maintenance and non-invasive, needing no division. Simply cut back dead foliage to ground level in late winter, before new growth appears in spring.
