Molinia caerulea 'Banshee'
A superb purple moor grass for extended seasonal interest, Molinia caerulea 'Banshee' forms neat, upright tussocks of bright green, linear foliage from which airy, graceful flower plumes rise from early summer right through to autumn. The flowers open a striking dark purple before softening to a delicate haze of pink, proving highly attractive to pollinators throughout their long flowering period.
As the season progresses, the foliage and stems take on rich golden tones, and even once the weather turns colder the feathery plumes hold their shape, bringing structure and movement to the garden well into winter. Compact and clump-forming, 'Banshee' reaches around 100cm in height with a spread of 70cm, making it a versatile choice for perennial borders, naturalistic planting schemes, or mass planting in drifts.
This low-maintenance, deciduous grass copes well with drought, coastal winds, and pollution once established, and as a sterile cultivar it won't self-seed around the garden. Grow in any fertile, moist, well-drained soil, ideally slightly acidic, in full sun or partial shade. Cut back dead foliage and stems to ground level in early spring before new growth appears, and lift and divide congested clumps every third year to maintain vigour.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
