Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Chief'
Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Chief' brings bold, late-season colour to the garden with its striking deep red flower plumes, held well above narrow, arching green foliage. Blooming from late summer into autumn, the feathery panicles open in a rich maroon-red before gradually fading to silver, remaining on the plant through winter to catch the frost. As the season turns, the leaves shift to warm yellow and gold before fading to pale brown, giving this grass real presence right through to spring.
A clump-forming, deciduous grass with an upright, arching habit, 'Red Chief' reaches 1–1.5m in height with a spread of 0.5–1m, making it a superb focal point in mixed borders, prairie-style planting, or informal wildlife-friendly schemes. It's a hardy and low-maintenance choice, tolerant of exposure and happy in any moist but well-drained soil.
Grow in full sun for the best flower colour and autumn foliage display. Cut back close to the ground in late winter or early spring, before new growth emerges, to keep clumps neat and healthy.
