Fig (Ficus) Brown Turkey 3L

One of the toughest and most reliable fig varieties for the UK, Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey' combines bold, deeply lobed foliage with a generous harvest of pear-shaped figs, ripening from green to a rich purple-brown with sweet, red flesh inside. Self-fertile and fully hardy, it's equally happy trained against a warm wall, grown as a freestanding bush, or kept compact in a large pot on the patio.

For the best crops, plant in a warm, sheltered, south or south-west facing spot in well-drained soil, giving it as much sun as possible. If growing in open ground, restrict the roots by planting into a large bottomless pot sunk into the soil, or a lined pit — this channels the plant's energy into fruit rather than leafy growth. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring, keep it watered through the growing season without letting it sit wet, and prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and size. Figs typically ripen from late summer into early autumn, ready to pick as soon as they soften.
