Fagus sylvatica (Atropurpurea Group) 'Purpurea Pendula' (12L Pot)

A classic mushroom-shaped weeping tree, 'Purpurea Pendula' is often grown as a top-worked specimen, its strongly pendulous branches cascading down from the graft point to create a distinctive dome or fountain shape — the ultimate height depends entirely on where it's grafted, so it makes a wonderfully characterful feature even in a modest-sized garden. The wavy-edged, dark purple foliage holds its rich colour well through summer, turning reddish-brown in autumn.

Insignificant yellow-green flowers appear in spring, followed by typical spiny beech fruits in autumn. The smooth grey bark and sculptural weeping form provide good structural interest through winter too.

Tolerant of a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand, it thrives best in a sheltered position in full sun, which brings out the deepest purple colour. Given time it reaches an eventual height and spread of around 2.5–4m, making it an excellent choice as a striking specimen for a smaller garden, courtyard, or as an eye-catching focal point in a border.
