Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Purple' (12L Pot)

A striking narrowly columnar form of our native beech, 'Dawyck Purple' combines the same slender, upright habit as the golden-leaved 'Dawyck Gold' with deep, rich purple foliage that holds its colour beautifully right through the season, thanks to being grafted true to type. The leaves deepen further to a rich reddish-purple in autumn before falling. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is a superb architectural choice for gardens where space is limited.

Inconspicuous flower catkins appear in spring, followed by typical bristly beech fruits in autumn.

Tolerant of a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand, it thrives in full sun or partial shade — full sun brings out the deepest, richest purple tones. Given time it will grow tall, eventually exceeding 12m, but its comparatively narrow spread of around 4–8m makes it far better suited to smaller gardens and tighter spaces than the spreading common beech, whether planted as a striking avenue, a boundary screen, or a dramatic vertical accent.
