Fagus sylvatica (Common Beech) (12L Pot)

Our native common beech is a large, vigorous deciduous tree, forming a broad, spreading crown that has shaped the British landscape for centuries — as valued for woodland planting and parkland specimens as it is for classic beech hedging. Fresh yellow-green leaves emerge in spring, maturing to a rich green through summer, before turning a glorious golden-copper to russet-brown in autumn, with dried leaves often persisting on younger growth and hedges well into winter. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Small, inconspicuous flowers appear in early spring, followed by typical bristly beech fruits (nuts) in autumn, providing valuable food for squirrels, birds and other wildlife.

Wonderfully adaptable, it tolerates a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand, and thrives in full sun or partial shade. Given time it will grow into a substantial specimen tree, eventually exceeding 12m in height with a spread wider than 8m — though it also makes an outstanding formal or informal hedge when clipped regularly, holding its brown winter foliage for excellent screening and privacy year-round.
