Crataegus × media 'Plena' (12L Pot)

Also known as the double white hawthorn, 'Plena' is a rounded, thorny deciduous tree that puts on a spectacular show in late spring and early summer, when clusters of small, fragrant double white flowers smother the branches, fading gracefully to soft pink as they age. The shallowly-lobed, glossy dark green leaves form a dense, spreading canopy, turning warm shades of yellow, orange and red in autumn.

Rounded red berries follow the flowers, providing valuable food for garden birds through autumn and winter, while the dense canopy offers excellent nesting cover. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is a magnet for bees and other pollinating insects when in full bloom.

Hardy and low-maintenance, it tolerates a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand, and copes well with coastal, exposed, polluted or damp sites, thriving in full sun or partial shade. Given time it will reach an eventual height and spread of around 4–8m, making it an excellent specimen tree for smaller gardens, woodland-edge planting, or as a striking addition to a wildlife border.
