Cortaderia selloana 'Pumila' (Dwarf Pampas Grass)

A compact, garden-friendly form of pampas grass, 'Pumila' brings all the architectural drama of its larger cousin without swamping a smaller border. Through late summer and into winter, dense arching clumps of narrow, dark green foliage send up tall stems topped with silky, creamy-white plumes that catch the light beautifully and look especially striking rimmed with frost. This RHS Award of Garden Merit winner is fully hardy and holds its shape as a strong architectural feature right through the colder months.

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, allowing plenty of room for it to develop into a fine specimen — it reaches a mature height of 1 to 1.5 metres with a spread of 0.5 to 1 metre over five to ten years. It's tolerant of exposed and coastal sites, making it a reliable choice for Cornish gardens. Cut back old stems and tidy away dead foliage in late winter or early spring, taking care as the leaf margins are sharp-edged.
