Cortaderia selloana (Pampas Grass)

The classic, statement-making pampas grass — a densely tufted, evergreen perennial forming imposing clumps of arching, blue-green foliage. From late summer into early autumn, tall upright stems carry large, plume-like panicles in glistening silver-white, often flushed with soft pink or purple, that persist through the colder months and provide striking winter structure.

This is a big, architectural plant, reaching around 2.5 to 3 metres in height with foliage spreading to a similar width, so it needs a generous position to develop fully — best used as a specimen or backdrop planting rather than in a small border. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, and protect the crown with a dry mulch during the first winter while it establishes. Cut back old stems and comb out dead foliage annually in late winter, taking care as the leaf margins are sharply toothed.
