Iris Reticulata Alida (10)

A relatively hard-to-find gem among the reticulata irises, 'Alida' offers a delicate, soft blue that's a little different from the more common deep purples and blues. Each fall carries a bold central yellow band, edged in white and finely speckled with dark blue — a striking, jewel-like detail best appreciated up close.

Standing at 15cm, Alida is a genuinely strong performer, having been trialled and recommended by Which? Gardening for its vigour and intensely coloured flowers. It flowers from late winter into early spring and naturalises readily if left undisturbed, making it ideal for clustering at the front of a border, potting up for the patio, or tucking into a rockery.

Plant bulbs in autumn, around 5cm deep, in a sunny position in well-drained soil. Water moderately while in growth and keep on the drier side during dormancy. As with all iris, bulbs and sap can be harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling.
