Few sights capture the magic of an English spring quite like a carpet of native bluebells. Hyacinthoides non-scripta produces elegant, one-sided racemes of nodding, narrowly bell-shaped flowers in a deep violet-blue, each releasing a delicate, sweet fragrance that's unmistakable on a still spring morning. Look closely and you'll spot the tell-tale white pollen and gracefully arching stems that distinguish our true native bluebell from the more upright, unscented Spanish variety.
Reaching 20–40cm, English bluebells are wonderfully easy to grow and perfect for naturalising in dappled shade beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, where they'll form dense, spreading drifts over the years. A magnet for bees and other early pollinators, they bring a genuine touch of native woodland charm to any garden.
Plant bulbs in autumn, around 8cm deep, in moderately fertile, humus-rich soil that doesn't dry out, in sun to partial shade. As with all hyacinthoides, bulbs and sap can be harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling.
Each bulb is hand-selected before dispatch.
