Cercidiphyllum japonicum — 12L Pot
The katsura tree is one of the most elegant medium-to-large trees for autumn interest, valued as much for its scent as its colour. Paired, broadly heart-shaped leaves emerge bronze-tinted in spring before settling into green through summer, then turn a beautiful blend of yellow, orange and pink in autumn — and as they fall, they release a distinctive fragrance often likened to burnt sugar or candy floss, filling the air around the tree on a still autumn day. Flowers and fruit are inconspicuous, so the real interest is entirely in the foliage and form.
Best given a sheltered position, ideally in a woodland-style setting, as late frosts can damage young leaves; it thrives in moist but well-drained soil, whether clay, sand or loam, and prefers neutral to acid conditions for the best autumn colour. This is a tree for the long term, eventually reaching well over 12m with a spread wider than 8m over 20–50 years, so it earns its place as a genuine specimen tree given space to grow.
Each tree is hand-selected before dispatch.
