Amelanchier lamarckii — 12L Pot

One of the most reliable and widely loved of all the amelanchiers, Amelanchier lamarckii — the snowy mespilus, or juneberry — has held the RHS Award of Garden Merit since 1976, and it's easy to see why. Bronze-tinged young leaves emerge alongside short, lax racemes of white, star-shaped flowers in spring, followed by red berries that ripen to a deep purple-black through summer, providing a valuable feast for garden birds. Come autumn, the foliage turns a warm orange and red for one final flourish before the leaves fall.

A large, erect deciduous shrub or small tree of open, graceful habit, Amelanchier lamarckii offers a genuinely long season of interest from a single plant, making it one of the best all-round choices for a specimen tree, mixed border or informal wildlife planting — and it can be grown as either a single-stemmed tree or a handsome multi-stemmed shrub.

Grow in full sun or partial shade, in moist, lime-free, well-drained soil — this species does best on acid to neutral ground, and colours most vividly in full sun. It's fully hardy (RHS H7), copes with both exposed and sheltered positions, and is generally pest-free, needing only minimal pruning once established.
