Allium Purple Sensation (50)

One of the most popular and reliable ornamental alliums for good reason, 'Purple Sensation' produces perfectly round, densely packed globes of vivid, deep violet-purple flowers, each head made up of 50 or more tiny star-shaped blooms. Held on strong, upright stems, they seem to burst from the top of the plant like a firework caught mid-explosion.

Reaching up to 1m tall, Purple Sensation is a genuine architectural highlight for the late-spring border, and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding garden performance. It's a magnet for bees and butterflies, thrives with minimal fuss, and makes a superb cut flower — while the skeletal seedheads that follow flowering provide striking interest well into autumn.

Plant bulbs in autumn, at two to three times their own depth, in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. In heavier or wetter soils, alliums are best grown in containers to avoid rot. Ideally, plant among other perennials whose foliage will mask the leaves as they die back.
