Allium Globemaster (1)

A true architectural showstopper, Allium 'Globemaster' produces some of the largest and most striking flower heads of any ornamental onion — dense, perfectly spherical globes up to 20cm across, packed with starry violet-purple florets. Held aloft on strong, sturdy stems, they bring bold structure and drama to any border.

Reaching around 80cm in height, Globemaster is best planted towards the middle or back of a border, where its huge mauve spheres can punctuate perennial planting schemes to spectacular effect. Remarkably, the flower heads tend to grow even larger in subsequent years as the bulb matures, making this a genuinely rewarding long-term investment for the garden. An RHS Award of Garden Merit holder, it's a favourite with bees and pollinators, and the sculptural blooms make superb cut flowers — the seedheads can also be left in place or dried for extended winter interest.

Plant bulbs in autumn, around 10cm deep, in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
