Betula pendula subsp. pendula 'Tristis' — 12Ltr Pot

Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Betula pendula 'Tristis' is one of the most elegant weeping birches available, with a narrow, symmetrical crown built from long, slender, drooping branchlets that cascade gracefully from a central leader. Oval, bright green leaves turn a clear yellow in autumn, and slender brown catkins add further interest in spring, all set against the tree's classic peeling white bark.

A large deciduous tree with a distinctly upright, columnar silhouette despite its weeping branches, 'Tristis' makes a striking specimen for larger gardens or open spaces where its graceful form can be fully appreciated — narrower than many weeping birches, so it suits situations where width is at a premium but height isn't a problem.

Grow in full sun or partial shade, in any reasonably fertile, moist but well-drained soil — this variety is tolerant of chalk, clay, loam and sand. It's fully hardy (RHS H7), copes with both exposed and sheltered sites, and needs only minimal pruning once established, best carried out between late summer and midwinter to avoid heavy sap "bleeding."

Each tree is hand-selected before dispatch, supplied in a 12-litre pot ready for planting straight into its final position.
