Betula pendula 'Royal Frost' — 12Ltr Pot
A real change of pace for the birch family, Betula pendula 'Royal Frost' trades the usual green canopy for deep, rich purple foliage that holds its colour right through summer — leaves stay greener if grown in a little more shade, but colour most intensely in full sun. This dramatic foliage is set off beautifully against the tree's white bark, which shows warm brown tones on the younger stems, and the display finishes with a clear yellow in autumn before leaf-fall.
An upright but pleasingly spreading tree, 'Royal Frost' makes a real focal point in the garden, offering something genuinely different from the classic silver birch look while still bringing all the elegance and light canopy the genus is loved for — ideal as a specimen where its unusual colouring can take centre stage.
Grow in full sun or partial shade, in any reasonably fertile, moist but well-drained soil — this variety is tolerant of chalk, clay, loam and sand. It's fully hardy (RHS H7), copes with both exposed and sheltered sites, and needs only minimal pruning once established, best carried out between late summer and midwinter to avoid heavy sap "bleeding."
Each tree is hand-selected before dispatch, supplied in a 12-litre pot ready for planting straight into its final position.
