Apple (Malus) Ellison's Orange MM106

A distinctive dessert apple bred by Rev. Ellison in Lincolnshire, from Cox's Orange Pippin crossed with a French variety (likely Calville Blanc). First marketed by Pennells Nurseries in 1911, and holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit ever since. Often described as "a Cox with extra character" — and considerably easier to grow.

Fruit is medium-sized, yellowish-green with a warm orange-red flush and stripes. The flesh is creamy-white, soft and juicy, with a rich, aromatic flavour and a distinctive hint of aniseed, which tends to develop more strongly the longer the fruit is kept — best enjoyed fresh if you're not a fan of that note.

A partial tip-bearer, reliable and a good cropper. Flowers late in the season (pollination group 4), making it a great choice for cooler areas, and is partially self-fertile, though it crops best with a nearby pollinating partner. Notably strong resistance to scab and frost damage. Picked from late September and best used within a few weeks, as it doesn't keep long-term.

Grown on semi-vigorous MM106 rootstock, reaching approximately 3–4m in height and spread at maturity — suitable as a bush or half-standard tree.

Supplied as a healthy, well-rooted tree, ready to establish in its new home. A wonderfully characterful, easy-to-grow alternative to Cox, with a flavour all its own.
