Apple (Malus) Charles Ross MM106

A handsome dual-purpose apple, raised by Charles Ross, head gardener at Welford Park, Berkshire (a cross of Peasgood's Nonsuch and Cox's Orange Pippin). Awarded the RHS First Class Certificate in 1899 and the Award of Garden Merit in 1993. Often described as resembling a larger, more robust Cox's Orange Pippin.

Fruit is large and conical, with a greenish-yellow skin flushed and streaked with red, and some light russeting. The flesh is white, sweet, juicy and lightly aromatic — excellent eaten fresh, and equally good cooked, holding some texture rather than collapsing to a purée, making it a great choice for pies and crumbles.

Flowers in mid-season (pollination group 3) and is partially self-fertile, though it will crop even better with a nearby pollinating partner. A vigorous, spreading tree with strong scab resistance and very regular cropping. Picked from September and best used within a month or so of harvest, as it doesn't keep long-term.

Grown on semi-vigorous MM106 rootstock, reaching approximately 3–4m in height and spread at maturity — suitable as a bush or half-standard tree.

Supplied as a healthy, well-rooted tree, ready to establish in its new home. A reliable, great-tasting all-rounder for the garden.
