Thompson & Morgan Kew 'Globe Artichoke' seeds

Part of the Kew Pollinators seed range, developed with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, this improved variety of Globe Artichoke bears larger, heavier heads of more consistent quality, with the characteristic sharp spines greatly reduced compared to older varieties. The tender hearts make a genuinely delicious delicacy when pickled, and the base of the leaves is edible too, making this a majestic and productive addition to any vegetable plot. It earns its place in the ornamental garden just as readily — left unharvested, the striking thistle-like flowers become a magnet for bees, making it a lovely dual-purpose choice for anyone wanting a statement plant that feeds both the kitchen and the local pollinators.

Growing guide

Grow in rich, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, with some shelter from strong winds. Direct sow outdoors from March to April, once the soil has warmed up, into a well-prepared seedbed with 2–3 seeds per station in drills spaced 30cm apart. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out — the thinnings can be transplanted elsewhere rather than discarded. Plants sown outdoors will usually flower the year after sowing.

Cover young plants with fleece to protect them from frost, and mulch thickly with organic matter around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Water regularly through summer, particularly in dry spells. Harvest from July, cutting the heads while the buds are still plump and before the scales begin to open. Globe artichokes will crop well for several seasons, but are best replaced after about three years to keep vigour and yields up.
