A striking, clump-forming deciduous grass with dark purple-green, arching foliage that intensifies through the season before turning a vivid burgundy-red in autumn. From late summer, wiry stems carry graceful, silvery-white plumes with dark purple anthers, standing well above the foliage — the dried flower heads then hold their structure through into winter, giving this grass a genuinely long season of interest. Reaches around 1.2m in height with a 1m spread, making it a strong statement plant for borders or large containers.
Care: Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Protect from excessive winter wet. Cut down dead leaves and old flowered stems to just above ground level in late winter or early spring — the cut stems can be left around the base as a mulch. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps every third or fourth year to keep the plant vigorous.
