Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor)

A rhizomatous perennial to around 80cm in height, forming clumps of narrow, upright, sword-shaped foliage. Branched stems carry several bluish-purple flowers, 6-8cm across, each fall marked with a striking white, purple-veined basal patch and a touch of yellow. Flowers from late spring into early summer.

Native to North America, Blue Flag Iris is a superb marginal plant for pond edges and streambanks, equally at home in a consistently moist border. It thrives in full sun or partial shade, in moist to wet, humus-rich soil, and can be grown in water up to around 15cm deep.
