A truly statuesque ornamental onion, Allium 'Gladiator' produces dense, spherical umbels of rich purple, star-shaped flowers, each up to 15cm across, held aloft on tall, sturdy stems well above the coarse, strap-shaped foliage. Flowering in late spring and early summer, it makes a dramatic focal point rising through borders of lower-growing perennials, and the dried seedheads continue to provide striking architectural interest long after the flowers have faded.
Reaching up to 120cm in height, this variety is best planted in autumn, 15-20cm deep, in well-drained soil in full sun. As a larger allium, it benefits from richer, deeper soil than smaller species, and dislikes sitting in wet ground over winter, so improve heavy clay with grit before planting. As with other alliums, the foliage carries a distinct onion scent when bruised.
