This hardy annual sends up tall, elegant stems topped with delicate umbels of tiny white flowers, held above finely divided, ferny foliage that gives the whole plant a light, romantic feel. It's a favourite for softening the edges of borders, weaving through ornamental grasses, and bringing movement to naturalistic planting schemes — and its long stems make it just as good cut for the vase as it is left growing in the garden. The flowers are a magnet for bees, butterflies and beetles, while the seed heads that follow in autumn are a welcome food source for finches, making this a genuinely useful plant for anyone gardening with wildlife in mind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGrowing guide\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"\u003eSow directly outdoors from April to June, in full sun or light shade, into fertile, well-drained soil raked to a fine tilth. Sow thinly, at a depth of around 1.5mm, in drills spaced 30cm apart, then water regularly, especially through dry spells. Germination takes 7–21 days. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 25cm apart to give each plant room to develop. Ammi grows quite tall and will need support — pop twiggy sticks in among the seedlings while they're still around 10cm high, and let the plants grow up through them for a natural framework that holds the stems without looking staked.
