It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Clusters of white flowers open in late spring. By autumn these have become bunches of pale primrose berries that ripen to butter-yellow and amber. At the same time, the fresh green, finely divided leaves turn glorious shades of orange, red and purple. The golden fruit against that fiery foliage is a unique combination, and the berries often hang on the branches well into early winter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe flowers attract bees and other pollinators, and birds feed on the berries as the season turns. The fruit is ornamental and shouldn't be eaten by people or pets, so wear gloves when handling berried branches.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eGrow in full sun or partial shade, in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. It grows in clay, loam or sand and does best in acid to neutral conditions. It is fully hardy, tolerant of urban pollution, and copes with both exposed and sheltered positions. Its broadly upright habit makes it an ideal specimen for smaller gardens. Expect around 7.5m tall and 3m wide after fifteen years in good soil, eventually reaching 8–12m with a spread of 4–8m over many decades. Work well-rotted compost into the planting hole, stake firmly, and water well through the first summer.
