It comes from the western Himalayas. Its soft pink blossom, unusual among rowans, opens in spring. By late summer this has become heavy, hanging clusters of large, pearl-white berries on crimson stalks, each around 12mm across. The berries last remarkably well and often stay on the bare branches long after the leaves have fallen, lighting up the garden well into winter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe elegant, finely divided foliage is made up of as many as 19 leaflets, giving a light, airy canopy with dappled shade. The spring flowers are popular with bees and other pollinators, and the berries give birds food later in the season. The fruit is ornamental and shouldn't be eaten by people or pets, so wear gloves when handling berried branches.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eGrow in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained, acid to neutral soil. It grows in clay, loam or sand but dislikes shallow chalk. It is fully hardy, tolerates urban pollution and grows as a spreading small tree or large shrub. That makes it an ideal specimen for front gardens, courtyards and lawns. It reaches its mature size in around ten to twenty years, typically 4–8m in both height and spread. Improve the planting hole with well-rotted compost, stake firmly, and water well through the first couple of summers.
