It was one of the most popular early potatoes of the 1950s and is still grown today for its dependable crops and excellent boiling quality. It produces high yields of large, long-oval tubers with smooth, pale skins, shallow eyes and white flesh. Predominantly waxy, the potatoes hold together well in the pan, making them ideal for new potatoes and salads.

Ulster Prince matures a little later than some first earlies and has good tolerance of drought, but its foliage is sensitive to frost, so make sure the worst frosts have passed before the shoots emerge, or cover them with fleece. Chit your seed potatoes on a cool, bright windowsill for four to six weeks, then plant out from March to April, around 10cm deep and 30cm apart. Earth up as the shoots develop to protect them from late frosts and keep the tubers covered, as potatoes exposed to light turn green and shouldn’t be eaten. Keep well watered in warm weather, and your crop should be ready to lift in June and July. Supplied in a 2kg pack, ideal for a good-sized row or several potato bags.

Each pack is checked before dispatch.
