seed-potato-setanta
Seed Potato Setanta

Setanta is a modern Irish maincrop, bred by Teagasc with the much-loved Rooster as one of its parents, and prized by gardeners for its strong resistance to blight. It produces high yields of medium-sized, oval tubers with deep red skins, shallow eyes and creamy-yellow flesh. Its floury texture makes it an excellent all-rounder in the kitchen, especially for roast potatoes with crisp skins, fluffy mash, baking and chips.

Setanta’s blight resistance is particularly strong in the tubers, making it a reliable choice for late-season cropping when blight is most likely to strike, as well as for organic and low-input growing. It also shows low levels of bruising and damage and is an excellent keeper, so a good crop will see you well into winter. It grows well in open ground or in large pots and potato sacks, in a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil. Chitting is optional for maincrops but helps get them off to a strong start. Plant out from late March to April, around 10cm deep and 40cm apart. Earth up as the shoots develop so the tubers stay covered, as potatoes exposed to light turn green and shouldn’t be eaten. Water well once tubers begin to form, and lift your crop from late summer into autumn, around 18 to 20 weeks after planting. Store in a cool, dark, dry place.

Each pack is checked before dispatch.
