seed-potato-orla
Seed Potato Orla

Orla is a modern Irish variety that gives you remarkable flexibility in the vegetable garden. Bred by Teagasc and introduced in 1997, it holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is especially popular with organic gardeners thanks to its excellent disease resistance. It produces high yields of bold, short-oval tubers with smooth, pale skins, shallow eyes and creamy, light yellow flesh with a good flavour. Lifted early, the fairly firm, slightly waxy texture is ideal for boiling as new potatoes; left to bulk up, it also makes good mash.

Orla’s standout quality is its strong resistance to blight in both foliage and tubers, along with good resistance to common scab, blackleg, bruising and splitting. It can be lifted as a first early, or left in the ground to harvest as a second early or even an early maincrop, extending your harvest well beyond most varieties. It also stores well for a first early, keeping for up to two months. Chit your seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free spot for around six weeks, then plant out from mid-March to mid-April, around 10cm deep and 30cm apart. Earth up as the shoots develop so the tubers stay covered, as potatoes exposed to light turn green and shouldn’t be eaten. Keep well watered, and your first potatoes should be ready to lift from early summer.

Each pack is checked before dispatch.
