seed-potato-international-kidney
Seed Potato International Kidney

International Kidney is a celebrated heritage variety, introduced in 1879 by the Victorian potato breeder Robert Fenn and best known as the potato grown on Jersey and sold as the famous Jersey Royal. It produces uniform, long, kidney-shaped tubers with paper-thin, pale skins and firm, creamy flesh with a rich, buttery flavour. Lifted young, the potatoes are waxy and delicate, perfect boiled or steamed with their skins on and served with butter and fresh mint, or in summer salads. Left in the ground to mature, they become more floury and make a good mash.

This versatile variety can be lifted as a second early or grown on as a maincrop, giving you a long harvest window. It grows well in borders, raised beds and large containers, in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Chit your seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free spot from early March, then plant out in early April, or a little earlier in mild areas, around 10cm deep and 30cm apart. Earth up as the shoots develop so the tubers stay covered, as potatoes exposed to light turn green and shouldn’t be eaten. Water well during dry spells and keep an eye out for blight in warm, humid weather. Your first new potatoes should be ready to lift from July, with harvests continuing through August.

Each pack is checked before dispatch.
