Bred in the Netherlands in 1962, this reliable maincrop produces heavy yields of large, oval tubers with rosy-red skins and pale yellow flesh. Its firm, fairly waxy texture holds together well when cooked, making it wonderfully versatile: excellent for creamy mash, roasting and baking, where the red skins crisp up beautifully, as well as for boiling and chips.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eDesiree is valued for its high resistance to drought and good resistance to powdery scab, so it copes well in dry summers and tends to produce clean, attractive tubers. It performs best in well-drained soil, as tubers can become misshapen on heavy ground. Chitting is optional for maincrops but helps get them off to a strong start. Plant out in April, around 10cm deep and 40cm apart, giving plenty of room for the larger plants. Earth up as the shoots develop so the tubers stay covered, as potatoes exposed to light turn green and shouldn’t be eaten. Water well during dry spells, then lift your crop from late summer into autumn.
